| Buying difference | VMware Cloud Foundation | Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure with AHV |
|---|---|---|
| Current price | Subscription quote required for the exact entitlement and hardware | Subscription quote required for the NCI edition and hardware |
| Virtualization | VMware ESX and vCenter within the VCF platform | Nutanix AHV virtualization within NCI |
| Storage platform | vSAN capabilities and capacity entitlement depend on the purchased bundle | Nutanix AOS distributed storage; edition and capacity matter |
| Administration | vCenter plus VCF management and operations tools | Prism management for the Nutanix environment |
| “Free hypervisor” implication | A previous perpetual license does not establish the price of a new VCF subscription | AHV inclusion does not make servers, NCI, support, or migration free |
| Existing VMware applications | Staying can preserve the current operating workflow; version upgrades may still be needed | Check application-vendor support for AHV and the intended guest operating system |
| Migration work | Upgrade and compatibility work if retaining VMware | VM conversion, network mapping, backup changes, testing, and cutover |
| Main limitation / extra cost | Historical perpetual-license costs do not establish current subscription economics | Included AHV is not a free infrastructure stack; price NCI, hardware, support and migration |
| Best fit (Sigma assessment) | The current platform remains suitable and avoiding a migration has documented value | The full NCI quote plus an application-supported migration makes the stronger case |

Compare a renewal with a complete move
Request the VMware renewal against the hardware you actually have, including processors, cores, storage entitlement, and the term. Current VCF licensing uses centralized licensing services; an old license key or expired reseller estimate is not a current purchasing basis. Keep the precise order terms with the quote.
Then price Nutanix on supported hardware with the required NCI edition, AHV, support, storage, and backup licenses. Reusing servers is a saving only if that specific configuration is supported. Include additional capacity for migration overlap: production systems and their replacements may need to run together.
Compare both over the same period. The migration option should include implementation labor, staff training, application testing, temporary capacity, and the remaining value or disposal cost of equipment being retired. An annual subscription difference alone cannot show the payback period.
What can change the recommendation?
An application certified only for the existing VMware environment may outweigh a lower infrastructure quote. A business approaching a server refresh has more freedom because hardware replacement is already in the budget. A business with a stable, recently purchased cluster has a different calculation.
Test the hardest workload first: the database, specialized appliance, backup restore, or application with strict support requirements. Confirm both a successful move and a rollback procedure. Moving an easy test VM proves very little about those dependencies.
Choose VCF when its supported renewal and upgrade path provides the stronger total-cost case. Choose NCI with AHV when verified application support, the platform quote, and migration costs justify the change. Sigma can help turn competing proposals into one comparable project budget.
Questions to ask before you buy
- What does the VCF renewal cost for our exact core count and term?
- Are our current servers on Nutanix’s supported hardware list?
- Does our backup product support AHV?
- Which applications are certified only on VMware?
- What migration labor, testing and overlap capacity are included?
What Hawaiʻi businesses should check
If hardware must be replaced as part of a move, add shipping lead time to Hawaiʻi to the project schedule and keep the current cluster supported until cutover is complete.
Frequently asked questions
Is Nutanix AHV free?
AHV is included with Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure licensing, not sold separately for free. Compare the full NCI subscription, support and hardware against the VMware renewal.
How long does a VMware to Nutanix migration take?
It depends on the number of workloads and application testing. Start with the hardest application and a rollback plan; an easy test VM proves little about the rest.
