UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra vs U6+: Router or Access Point?

You need both for a UniFi network: the Cloud Gateway Ultra ($129) is the router and network controller, and the U6+ ($129) is the Wi-Fi 6 access point. The gateway alone provides no Wi-Fi, and the access point alone cannot replace a router. Budget $258 before surcharges, plus PoE power, cabling and setup.

At a glance

  • Cloud Gateway Ultra: $129 ($142 with displayed surcharge); runs UniFi Network; 1Gbps IPS routing.
  • U6+: $129 ($142 with surcharge); dual-band Wi-Fi 6; powered by PoE.
  • The gateway’s LAN ports should not be assumed to provide PoE.

Why one box is sometimes enough

Some other products combine gateway and Wi-Fi functions. That does not mean every device called a router or gateway contains a radio. The Cloud Gateway Ultra is a useful example of a separate-component design: the gateway can stay with the internet equipment while the access point is placed where people need coverage.

That separation can be useful in offices where the internet handoff is inside a cabinet or at one end of the building. A radio placed there may not cover the working area well. Moving an access point to a suitable wired location addresses a different problem from upgrading the internet plan.

What the complete network costs

The two base hardware prices add to $258 before any applicable surcharge. That is not a complete installed network price. Add a supported power source for the access point, cables, any required switch and configuration work. A gateway’s ordinary Ethernet ports should not be assumed to deliver PoE.

The correct quantity of access points depends on the building and workload. More devices are not automatically better if channels and placement are poor. Survey the location and validate coverage after installation.

Which do you need?

Buy a gateway when you need its routing, network-control or internet-edge functions. Buy an access point when you need Wi-Fi coverage behind a suitable gateway. Buy both when building a separate-component network and both roles are required.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • How many access points does the building need, based on a site survey?
  • How will access points get PoE power?
  • Who will own and administer the UniFi account?
  • Is a spare access point budgeted?

What Hawaiʻi businesses should check

Ubiquiti’s store prices exclude shipping and tax; confirm delivery cost to Hawaiʻi and keep a spare access point for larger sites.

Frequently asked questions

Will a stronger access point make a slow internet plan faster?

It can address a Wi-Fi bottleneck, but it cannot increase the service speed supplied by the internet provider.
