Cloud management is not a second copy of every recording
A system may use cloud-based administration while recording video locally. If a camera is stolen or its storage fails, the existence of a cloud dashboard does not prove that the missing footage is stored elsewhere. Specify which footage is copied, where it is stored, how quickly it uploads, and how long it remains available.
Likewise, a saved incident clip and continuous cloud recording are different services. Rhombus license tiers and Axis's cloud-storage add-on should be compared against the same retention requirement, rather than treating all “cloud” features as equivalent.
What should a comparable quote contain?
Use the same number of cameras, scene requirements, recording resolution, frame rate, and retention days. Include switches, power, cabling, mounts, storage, licenses, and installation. A cheaper camera can require a different installation budget, especially outdoors or where cabling is difficult.
Demonstrate a search for an actual type of incident, export of a clip, and access from the intended manager's account. Define who may view recordings and who may share them. Confirm the local-recording behavior during an internet outage and the effect of a power outage separately.
Choose the system whose recording architecture and license terms match the business's evidence and retention needs. Sigma can compare Rhombus and Axis as complete installed systems, including the cost of keeping the required footage available.
Questions to ask before you buy
- How many days of footage must we keep?
- Where are recordings stored, and what happens during an internet outage?
- What license tier and term does each camera need?
- Are the cameras rated for our outdoor conditions?
What Hawaiʻi businesses should check
Outdoor cameras in Hawaiʻi face salt air, sun and rain; confirm each model’s environmental rating for the mounting location.
Frequently asked questions
Does Rhombus require a subscription?
Yes. Rhombus cameras require a platform license, priced by tier and term. Compare total cost across the license period, not camera price alone.
