When Slack earns the extra subscription
Slack can be worth paying for when a team already conducts useful work through its channels, integrations and partner conversations. Measure a specific benefit: fewer missed handoffs, a working integration that staff use, or a shared customer project process. Do not buy a second chat platform merely because another company prefers it.
For twenty paid active users, Slack Pro’s annual-rate reference equals $1,740 a year. If those employees already have Teams, that is an additional license budget, before migration or administration. Slack’s active-user billing rules should be checked against the actual account rather than assuming every invited account is billed forever.
When Teams is the simpler purchase
Teams is a logical starting point when Microsoft 365 already supplies the company’s email and files. Staff can work within the existing identity and document environment. That is a purchasing and administration advantage, not evidence that every workflow will be easier.
Test the collaboration you actually need: an external participant, a restricted channel, a shared file and a handoff to a colleague. Establish where the final document belongs. Two platforms can create two versions of the same discussion if the company does not set a clear working practice.
The upgrade trap
Slack Pro is not Slack’s complete enterprise security or AI package. Microsoft 365 Basic is not Business Premium, and neither is the same as a standalone Teams license. Name the required capability and SKU before comparing price. For a meeting-only requirement, Teams Essentials is a separate $4 annual-rate option worth evaluating.
Questions to ask before you buy
- Do we already pay for Microsoft 365 with Teams?
- Which Slack integrations and shared channels do we actually use?
- How many members are active each month (Slack bills active users)?
- Where will final documents and decisions be stored?
Frequently asked questions
Is Slack a replacement for Microsoft 365?
Not as a complete email and document suite. Compare overlapping collaboration functions and retain the software needed for the rest of the work.
Is Microsoft Teams free with Microsoft 365?
Teams is included in Microsoft 365 business plans sold “with Teams,” such as Business Basic ($7) and Business Standard ($14). Microsoft also sells no-Teams versions at a lower price, so check which one you own.
