HP OfficeJet 9135e vs LaserJet 3301fdw: Inkjet or Laser?

For a small office, HP’s OfficeJet Pro 9135e inkjet and Color LaserJet Pro 3301fdw print black pages at nearly the same speed (25 vs 26ppm). The laser is faster in color (26 vs 20ppm); the inkjet adds dual 250-sheet trays. Decide on cost per page at your mix of black and color, not on the “laser” label.

At a glance

  • OfficeJet Pro 9135e: 25ppm black, 20ppm color; dual 250-sheet trays; 35-sheet document feeder.
  • Color LaserJet Pro 3301fdw: 26ppm black and color; 4.3-inch touchscreen.
  • Cost per page = cartridge price ÷ rated yield, using the same page mix for both.

Main limitation / extra cost Ink subscriptions are a separate purchasing choice; compare page allowances and overages Higher print speed does not prove a lower cost per page; cartridge restrictions still matter
Best fit (Sigma assessment) Your quoted ink cost fits the page mix and 20ppm color is sufficient You need the higher stated 26ppm color rate and prefer a toner workflow

Calculate the running cost properly

For purchased supplies, divide each replacement cartridge’s quoted price by its applicable rated yield. For color pages, include the relevant color cartridges and black consumption rather than dividing one cartridge price by a full-color page count. Add maintenance supplies where the model requires them.

For a page subscription, the calculation changes: compare the monthly allowance, extra-page charges, rollover rules and cancellation conditions. Subscription ink and retail ink are different purchasing models. A plan that suits predictable output can be less attractive when monthly volume varies sharply.

Do not use the starter cartridges to estimate the replacement cost unless their yield is the actual basis of the calculation. Likewise, do not assume a high-yield cartridge fits merely because the brand name matches; the exact supply family matters.

Which is the better buy?

Shortlist the OfficeJet when its document quality, stated speed and verified ink economics fit the office. Shortlist the LaserJet when its stated color throughput and toner-based operation fit better. Neither can be declared lower-cost without current supply prices and the same page mix.

Print the company’s actual forms, envelopes and color documents. Check duplex behavior and scanning as well. The best comparison is the cost of producing usable business documents, not just the cheapest machine on a shelf.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • What share of our pages is color?
  • What is the cost per page using standard replacement cartridges?
  • Do we print envelopes, labels or heavy stock?
  • Is a supply subscription available for Hawaiʻi delivery, and what are its page limits?

What Hawaiʻi businesses should check

Ink and toner delivery times to your island matter as much as yield. Keep one spare set on hand and confirm whether a supply subscription ships to Hawaiʻi addresses.

Frequently asked questions

Is a monthly ink offer free printing?

No. Introductory periods, page limits and subsequent subscription charges have conditions. Read the model’s offer before enrollment.

Is a laser printer cheaper to run than an inkjet?

Not automatically. Divide each cartridge’s price by its rated yield and apply your real black and color mix. Business inkjets can compete with lasers at moderate volumes.
