Cisco Meraki CW9162 vs UniFi U6 Enterprise: Wi-Fi Costs

Both are Wi-Fi 6E access points, but the cost model differs. The Cisco CW9162 in Meraki mode requires a Meraki license for each access point, priced through Cisco partners. The UniFi U6 Enterprise costs $279 ($307 with the displayed surcharge) and runs on UniFi Network without a mandatory per-AP subscription. Compare three-year totals, not hardware prices.

At a glance

  • UniFi U6 Enterprise: $279 + $28 surcharge; 2.5GbE uplink; PoE+.
  • Meraki MR licensing is required for cloud management and support.
  • Both support 6GHz; clients need Wi-Fi 6E to use it.

Bands 2.4, 5 and 6GHz 2.4, 5 and 6GHz
Management environment Meraki cloud dashboard UniFi Network controller/console or supported hosting
Licensing basis Appropriate Meraki subscription required No mandatory per-AP UniFi Network subscription; hosting/support choices can cost extra
Deployment distinction Downloads assigned configuration from Meraki cloud Adopt into the selected UniFi management environment
Cisco-specific option CW9162 family also supports a Catalyst-managed mode; do not mix license assumptions Not a Catalyst access point
Support cost Verify included support, license term and replacement entitlement Verify warranty, optional coverage and who administers the network
Main limitation / extra cost Hardware alone does not include the complete Meraki license and support term The $307 store reference excludes PoE infrastructure, installation and paid hosting/support
Best fit (Sigma assessment) You want Meraki cloud administration and budget for its subscription You want no mandatory per-AP Network subscription and can operate UniFi

Why license cost belongs beside hardware cost

A Cisco proposal should specify the access point and its required license edition and term. A UniFi proposal should specify the management host, any paid hosting or support and the person responsible for administration. Neither “cloud-managed” nor “license-free” describes the complete installed cost on its own.

For a multi-year comparison, total the equipment, management platform, subscriptions, support and installation over the same period. If one quote contains three years of support and the other only hardware, a lower initial number does not establish lower equivalent cost.

Ubiquiti’s current store display also illustrates a smaller pricing detail: the base figure and the amount including its displayed surcharge differ. Use the current checkout basis, then add applicable tax and shipping. Do not publish the lower base number as an all-in delivered price.

The operational difference

Meraki is a logical shortlist for a team standardizing on its cloud dashboard, role model and licensed support arrangement. UniFi is a logical shortlist for a team that wants its integrated product range and can operate the chosen management environment. These are operating-model choices, not claims that one product never fails or requires no expertise.

For either platform, establish who owns the administrator account, where configuration records are kept and who responds to an outage. A business should retain appropriate control even when an outside provider manages the network. Changing service providers should not require guessing which account owns the equipment.

Wi-Fi 6E does not guarantee a faster office

Both compared products support 6GHz. Employees need compatible client devices to use that band, and the site must be designed around the applicable radio conditions. A new access point cannot fix a slow upstream connection, an underpowered switch or a poorly placed cable run.

Evaluate expected concurrent users, application traffic and the physical space. Conference rooms with many active clients can require a different design from an office with the same headcount spread across rooms. The right access-point quantity follows the design, not the vendor’s largest marketing coverage number.

The wired connection and power source also matter. Include compatible PoE equipment and the needed switch-port speed. A proposal with advanced access points and an unsuitable switching layer is incomplete even if each individual component is reputable.

Demonstrate the features that justify the purchase

Test employee authentication, guest separation, roaming between areas and the monitoring information the administrator will use. If an integration with an identity service is required, show it working in the proposed configuration. A generic dashboard demonstration does not verify a specific access policy.

For a multi-site business, also test how a new location is added and how a change is applied safely to a subset of sites. Document a rollback process before a broad configuration update. The value of centralized management is easier to judge when the team sees its actual recurring tasks performed.

Which should you choose?

Choose Meraki when its management and licensed service model solve a defined operational requirement at an acceptable term cost. Choose UniFi when its management features meet the requirement and the complete support arrangement preserves the hardware savings. If both pass the same site test, the complete cost and administration workload should decide.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • What is the three-year total for hardware, licenses and support?
  • Who administers the network, and who owns the account?
  • Do our client devices support 6GHz?
  • Are switches and PoE budgets sufficient for the new access points?

Frequently asked questions

Does UniFi have no recurring costs?

Core per-AP Network licensing is not mandatory, but hosting, optional services and professional support may still recur.

Can a Cisco Catalyst configuration use the same assumptions?

No. This table specifies Meraki management. Confirm the operating mode, controller and licensing in the actual Cisco order.
