At a glance
- Gateway: filters mail before delivery; requires mail-routing changes.
- API: scans and removes messages after delivery; no MX change.
- Archiving is a separate requirement from threat protection.

| Difference | Mimecast Advanced Email Security | Proofpoint Essentials |
|---|---|---|
| Price basis | Licensed users, selected protection/services and term | Licensed users, exact package and term |
| Deployment choice | MX-based gateway or API-based protection for Microsoft 365 | Gateway deployment and supported Microsoft 365 integrated options |
| Mail-flow distinction | Gateway sits before delivery; API approach scans/remediates after delivery | Behavior depends on selected deployment; document it in the design |
| Package structure | Quote the selected protection and deployment scope | Business, Advanced, Professional and applicable Plus packages |
| Archive inclusion | Separate archive scope must be identified | Email archive is listed for Professional / Professional+ |
| Attachment sandboxing | Confirm named protection entitlement | Higher package than basic reputation checks; identify Advanced/Professional entitlement |
| Microsoft 365 permissions | API approach requires appropriate tenant permissions | Integrated features require supported Microsoft 365 setup |
| Main limitation / extra cost | Archive and protection scope need separate confirmation in the selected package | Basic Essentials does not establish Professional/Professional+ archive entitlement |
| Best fit (Sigma assessment) | You need to choose explicitly between Mimecast gateway and API deployment | You want a defined Essentials package, including archive when buying Professional |

The delivery-path difference matters
Mimecast’s own documentation distinguishes pre-delivery gateway protection from post-delivery API scanning and remediation. That is a concrete architectural difference. It affects how a rollout changes mail flow and how the business evaluates the handling of a detected message.
Do not assume API deployment means no operational decisions. Permissions, supported mailboxes, remediation behavior and alert ownership still require configuration. Conversely, gateway deployment needs the correct routing and connector setup; changing an MX record alone is not the full implementation.
Archive is not the same as security
A product that blocks suspicious email is not automatically a long-term archive. Proofpoint’s package distinctions make that visible: the archive feature is associated with the Professional packages in the cited documentation. For Mimecast, include the appropriate archive offering if retention and search are requirements.
Similarly, do not confuse an archive with every backup or recovery requirement. Define the records the business must retain and the actions it needs to perform, then choose the corresponding products.
Make the buying decision with real mail
Pilot the selected package with representative mailboxes and approved test messages. Check false positives, quarantine handling, administrator access and how a user reports a suspicious message. Confirm who reviews incidents and how the service provider handles them.
Choose the package whose documented deployment and operating process fit the organization. A lower quote is useful only if it contains the same protection, retention and service scope.
Questions to ask before you buy
- Do we want mail filtered before delivery (gateway) or scanned after (API)?
- Is archiving required, and for how long?
- Who reviews quarantined messages and user reports?
- Which Microsoft 365 or Google permissions will the service need?
Frequently asked questions
Is every Proofpoint Essentials edition equivalent?
No. Features such as archive and attachment analysis differ by package. Keep the full edition name on the quote.
