| Extra spectrum usable by every old laptop? | Existing supported bands | 6GHz requires compatible client hardware and configuration |
| Main limitation / extra cost | No 6GHz band and a 1GbE wired uplink | $66 higher surcharge-inclusive hardware reference; PoE+ and multi-gig infrastructure may add cost |
| Best fit (Sigma assessment) | Your fleet uses 2.4/5GHz and a 1GbE uplink meets measured demand | Compatible clients can use 6GHz or you need the 2.5GbE uplink |

What the upgrade costs before installation
At the displayed surcharge-inclusive references, the U7 Pro costs $66 more per access point. Four units add $264 in hardware compared with four U6+ units. If the current switch lacks the required power or desired multi-gig ports, the complete upgrade costs more than that difference.
A 2.5GbE uplink can remove a 1GbE link constraint in the right design. It cannot make an internet connection faster than the provider supplies, nor does it force a client to communicate at 2.5Gbps. The network path and workload determine whether the extra capacity is useful.
When to upgrade
Consider U7 Pro for a new installation expected to serve compatible devices, or when a site assessment identifies a problem the new capabilities can address. Keep a functioning Wi-Fi 6 deployment when it meets the application requirement and the proposed replacement has no demonstrated benefit.
For a difficult office, first determine whether the problem is interference, placement, client compatibility, switching or internet service. Buying a newer standard without identifying the bottleneck can leave the original problem in place.
A practical test
Compare both candidates in representative locations with a compatible client and a common older client. Measure the actual task—video calls, access to a local application or file transfers—not just a single internet speed test. Choose the design that meets the business requirement consistently.
Questions to ask before you buy
- Which client devices support Wi-Fi 7 and 6GHz?
- Do switches provide PoE+ and multi-gig ports?
- What problem is the upgrade expected to fix, and how will we measure it?
- Is the rest of the network (internet, switches, cabling) the real bottleneck?
Frequently asked questions
Does Wi-Fi 7 automatically make old devices faster?
No. Older devices use the capabilities they support. Improvements depend on the complete environment.
Do I need a new switch for Wi-Fi 7?
Possibly. The U7 Pro needs PoE+ power, and its 2.5GbE uplink only helps if the switch port supports multi-gig speeds.
