| Product scope | Policy-driven protection across supported enterprise, cloud and SaaS workloads | Enterprise backup/recovery across supported workloads |
| Management choice | SaaS and software modes have different functionality | SaaS/partner-managed or self-managed deployment choices |
| Local control-plane requirement | Evaluate the appropriate software/sovereign offering rather than assuming SaaS qualifies | Helios Self-Managed is documented for on-premises management |
| Isolated-copy family | Identify the quoted Rubrik vault offering and capacity | Identify the quoted Cohesity isolation/vault offering and capacity |
| Application coverage | Match against Rubrik’s supported-workload matrix | Match against Cohesity’s supported-workload matrix |
| Main limitation / extra cost | Do not assume SaaS and software service modes have identical features | Self-managed operation and cloud-delivered service are different operating commitments |
| Best fit (Sigma assessment) | Rubrik's supported workloads and recovery workflow pass your recovery test | Cohesity's workload coverage and chosen hosted/self-managed design pass your test |

“Cloud” does not identify where every component runs
Management, production data, backup copies and recovery resources can live in different places. A business with an on-premises management requirement should inspect the proposed service mode rather than rejecting or approving a product based on its name.
Similarly, buying a backup-as-a-service offering changes who operates parts of the infrastructure. It does not remove the need to define who validates recovery, maintains application dependencies or approves a restore.
Compare the same recovery scenario
Select an important application and define the acceptable data loss and outage. Ask each provider to demonstrate recovery from a protected copy into the intended environment, including the required identity and network dependencies. Compare elapsed time and manual work under the same scenario.
If malware inspection, sensitive-data analysis or an isolated copy is required, put that entitlement in both configurations. A broad platform demonstration may use features outside the quoted edition.
The cost comparison
Use the same protected capacity, growth, retention, recovery resources and support term. Separate software, infrastructure, cloud storage and professional services. A lower price based on a shorter retention period is not a like-for-like saving.
Choose the deployment that satisfies the control requirements and demonstrates the needed recovery at an acceptable total cost. A generic claim that either brand is “more secure” would go beyond the verified evidence.
Questions to ask before you buy
- Which service model do we need: vendor-managed, self-managed, or hybrid?
- What capacity, retention and growth should the quote assume?
- Which cyber-recovery features are included in the quoted edition?
- Can the vendor demonstrate our hardest application restore?
Frequently asked questions
Can these products be compared by price per terabyte alone?
Only when the licensed capacity definition, included features, retention and infrastructure assumptions match. Otherwise the unit prices describe different purchases.
