Acronis Cyber Protect vs Veeam Essentials: Backup Costs

Veeam Data Platform Essentials lists at $95 per license per year, sold in five-license packs for up to 50 workloads, and focuses on backup and recovery. Acronis Cyber Protect combines backup with cybersecurity features that vary by edition and is quoted per workload. Choose on what must be restored and prove it with a restore test.

At a glance

  • Veeam Essentials: $95/license/year MSRP; 5-license packs; max 50 workloads.
  • Six workloads need two packs: $950/year.
  • Storage, retention and immutability often cost more than the license.

Difference Acronis Cyber Protect, selected business edition Veeam Data Platform Essentials
Public price reference Exact edition/workload quote required $95 USD MSRP per license/year under published offer
Main purchase scope Backup plus edition-specific cybersecurity Backup/recovery platform for eligible small businesses
Purchase increment Depends on workload and licensing choice Packs of 5, maximum 50 workloads/licenses under Essentials rules
Five-license reference Obtain equivalent workload quote $475/year before storage, tax and services
Security distinction Anti-malware and management features depend on edition; some patching is Windows-specific Do not treat backup security as a replacement for a full endpoint-security subscription
Deployment choice Confirm business product and cloud/on-premises management option Confirm supported software deployment and protected workloads
Storage Identify included capacity versus separate destination charges Repository/cloud storage must be explicitly scoped
SaaS applications Verify exact supported application and licensing Microsoft 365 protection is a distinct product/entitlement to verify
Main limitation / extra cost Edition, workload and storage entitlement change what the license includes Five-license minimum is $475/year at MSRP; storage and Microsoft 365 protection need separate scope
Best fit (Sigma assessment) You want backup and the chosen edition's cybersecurity controls in one proposal You need a backup platform for no more than 50 eligible workloads

Start with what must be recovered

List the actual protected items: employee computers, virtual machines, physical servers, databases, file shares and SaaS applications. Then match them to the vendor’s supported workload and license definition. Five employees do not necessarily equal five backup licenses, and five servers do not necessarily represent the whole protection requirement.

Veeam’s pack structure matters for small purchases. A business needing six licensed workloads cannot price the order as six times the unit rate if the required increment is five. At the stated reference, two five-license packs total $950 annually. Confirm workload eligibility and the current licensing rules before ordering.

Acronis requires the same discipline around its edition and workload. A desktop price cannot be used as a server or Microsoft 365 price without verifying the license. The proposal should name the business product rather than rely on the Acronis brand alone.

Integrated security can change the comparison

Acronis may be attractive when the business wants to combine backup and specific cybersecurity functions in one management approach. Identify which existing products would actually be replaced and which remain necessary. An overlapping feature is not automatically a saving.

Veeam can be attractive when the business already has its endpoint-security arrangement and wants a dedicated backup/recovery platform. Its backup security and recovery capabilities should not be described as the same thing as a full endpoint protection or managed response service.

Both choices still require an operator. Someone must review failed jobs, capacity warnings and restore results. Software that successfully runs a scheduled task is not the same as a service that takes responsibility for resolving a failed backup.

Storage and retention can outweigh the license

Specify where copies will live and how long they must remain. Local repository hardware, cloud capacity, immutable retention and data-transfer charges can change the total materially. A license price without storage is not a complete backup budget.

Retention should follow a business requirement. Keeping more restore points consumes resources; keeping too few may leave the company without a usable version from before an unnoticed problem. Establish the period and capacity assumptions in both proposals before comparing cost.

The design should also consider access to backup data. A backup that can be deleted using the same compromised credentials as production has a different risk profile from a properly separated, protected copy. Verify the chosen configuration instead of assuming a marketing term supplies the entire control.

A restore test is the deciding evidence

Choose a representative file, a complete system and an important application where applicable. Restore them to an appropriate test location and verify that the resulting data or service is usable. Measure the full process, including access to credentials and the time needed to re-establish dependencies.

Agree on acceptable data loss and restoration time for each important workload. A daily file backup may satisfy one department and be inadequate for a frequently changing transaction system. Do not assign one recovery promise to every workload merely because they use the same software.

Record who performs a restore and who approves it. During an incident, uncertainty about those roles can delay recovery even when the backup exists. A managed-service proposal should state the provider’s actual responsibility and service hours.

Which should you choose?

Choose Acronis when the selected business edition’s combined protection scope matches the requirements and the restore test passes. Choose Veeam Essentials when the supported workloads, five-license increments and small-business limits fit the environment, with storage and operations fully priced.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • Which workloads must be protected, and how are they licensed?
  • Where will backup copies be stored, and are they immutable?
  • How much data can we afford to lose, and how fast must we recover?
  • Who checks failed jobs and runs restore tests?

What Hawaiʻi businesses should check

Keep at least one backup copy off-site and outside your main office, ideally in a different region, so a local outage or disaster cannot affect both.

Frequently asked questions

Is $95 the complete annual cost of a protected server?

No. It is Veeam’s published per-license MSRP reference. Pack requirements, storage, implementation and services can add cost.

Is a successful backup job enough?

No. A verified restore is stronger evidence that the design can recover the business’s actual data and applications.
